Title: Cage Match of the Week (aka Card of the Week)
Post by: Mic Qsenoch on October 31, 2014, 10:44:51 am
This is my first thread. Hooray!

Polk and I enjoyed our IGG games last night, and jsh suggested that a weekly series like this might be fun. So I am tentatively going to commit to doing this, although the schedule may end up being biweekly instead of weekly.

The basic idea is: we pick a card and just play random kingdoms with that card required on the board. We play games until one of us wants to stop. It's low-pressure unrated games for fun and some experimentation. But it's still a Cage Match!

Polk was interested in playing again next week at the same time, we just need another card to focus on.

Some suggestions from the chat last night:
- City
- Bishop
- Scout (of course)
- Probably more but I forgot

I would prefer to focus on cards which are medium to high strength as I think they make more sense to highlight. Scout is out, I'm afraid. A big positive is uniqueness of effect. Cards which create long games (timewise) are not so great.

I'm interested in what you guys think about this idea and what cards you would like to see.

Last night the audio was just me, but in the future I could Skype with my opponent if people like hearing that. I also think it would be good to have other people fight me in the Cage. Polk probably won't be available all the time and it adds a little variety.

I know the current timeslot (Thur at 24:00 UTC ) isn't great for Europeans unless they're night owls. Streaming earlier may not be great for Americans. Weekend streaming (say on a Sunday) might give better flexibility on timing, but of course people do other stuff on the weekends. There may be no good middle ground on this issue.

Any suggestions/feedback are welcome.

Procession! Procession is always awesome when it shines, so... Probably you won't be buying it all that often but, oh well. Although Procession may help to longer games as it's good in engines? On the other hand it helps to pile out...

I enjoy to see streams where people are talking on Skype, so go ahead :)

I'm okay watching the streams later as I often do with your or Adam's streamed games.

I like the current timeslot at least for the time being.

2400 UTC is okay, maybe 2300 would be better for me though.

Also, Rabble, Procession, Bishop are all cards that would interest me, as I'm often in 2 minds about when to buy Procession + Bishop, and how to build the best Rabble engine.

This is a wonderful idea.

Also, maybe add the link to the previous episodes in the OP. And yes, 24:00 is 1:00 here, so no chance at all on Thursdays. Two hours earlier and I'd probably watch live. (no idea how late that is where you live though)

Polk was interested in playing again next week at the same time, we just need another card to focus on.

Yep, next week or the week after works for me. Keeping a regularly scheduled day would make sense.

Quote
Last night the audio was just me, but in the future I could Skype with my opponent if people like hearing that.

I would be willing to Skype. If I had been miked yesterday you would have heard my mouse explode. Can't guarantee something that exciting will happen next time, though.

Quote
I also think it would be good to have other people fight me in the Cage. Polk probably won't be available all the time and it adds a little variety.

Sounds exciting! The next two weeks I am flexible weekday evenings, but yeah, after that my schedule gets tight again. I could also do this Sun afternoon. There's a reason I am not doing Dominion League.

From my perspective from watching, I would be more likely to watch live if it was a regularly scheduled weekday evening rather than on the weekend.

Maybe at some point, but for now I'd rather just pick the cards I'm interested in the most from the suggestions people give, plus input from the person I'm playing with. We aren't going to run out of cards any time soon, we already have a lot of nice options to choose from.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Next week will be vs. Polk with Tactician. Priority cards to do: Procession, Watchtower (with liopoil as opponent), Duke, and Haggler (my personal choice), and Bishop. Not sure on the order yet. We'll see how it goes from there.

The time slot isn't set in stone. I'm trying to establish some sort of default, just for my own sanity, but it's not clear yet when the best time will be. In any case, I'm always happy to shift times if it's needed. It may be a couple of weeks before I need another opponent, I'll PM you. Those are all cards I'm interested in doing, but I'll pass on Black Market for now since we've got your match with Stef already.

Thanks again, Mic, for inviting me into the ring again for the Tactician Cage Match! It was a lot of fun.
Thanks for playing again!

Here's a link to the logs of games (http://gokosalvager.com/logsearch?p1name=Mic+Qsenoch&p1score=any&p2name=Polk5440&startdate=11%2F05%2F2014&enddate=11%2F09%2F2014&supply=Tactician&nonsupply=&rating=any&pcount=2&colony=any&bot=false&shelters=any&guest=false&minturns=&maxturns=&quit=false&resign=any&limit=20&submitted=true&offset=0) we played that night, for those who are interested.

This one (http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20141106/log.51201cbee4b04e88c8da4f9a.1415326192392.txt) has a nice 1 point victory for Polk where Dame Josephine was the difference. And this one (http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?20141106/log.51201cbee4b04e88c8da4f9a.1415327277954.txt) gave us the dream Tactician board we were waiting for (Cellar, Hamlet, Black Market, Farming Village, Talisman, Apprentice, Council Room, Market, Merchant Guild, Tactician). I ended the game on turn 13 with 81 cards. The video is at http://www.twitch.tv/mic_qsenoch/c/5447803. I will try to keep the OP updated with a list of episodes.

This week I'll be playing against liopoil. The card is Watchtower, the time is Friday at 22:00 UTC. He is going to be streaming as well, so I'd check out the multitwitch.

I won't be doing a Cage Match stream next week (due to Thanksgiving travel). But I should resume the following week (with a new computer and hopefully no more broken up streams).

Nobody has PMed saying they want to play, so as of now it's not happening. I didn't really have time to hunt an opponent down this week. If anybody PMs during the day and says they can play this evening, I will gladly do the Cage Match after my league match.

Burnning Skull will play (with Bishop) if it's not too late for him by the time the league match finishes. If anyone else can make a more definite commitment, let me know. Otherwise I'll just try and take a volunteer from the audience of the league match. If that fails also then Christmas is cancelled.

Watching yesterdays smugglers game now. I'm watching the last game and I think a hunting party cagematch would be nice.

Nope, I don't really do these every week and they aren't tied to your thing at all. Probably you know this I am just not detecting some level of sarcasm or something.

No sarcasm.  It's just you do call it "Card of the Week", like my thing.  And you did do Smugglers that one time.

You need to do a Cage Match with Pathfinding.

Also, Blitz looks horrible. How can you survive that time constraint!?

Blitz was one of my favorite dominion variants ever invented

I'm assuming you'll be a playtester for Dominion Online 2017. If Stef and SCSN are okay with previews towards the end of this year, have you considered doing Empires cage matches?

I'd be particularly interested in Castles, Gladiator/ Fortune, Villa, City Quarter, and Donate.

I'd be happy to do some streams or recordings if it's allowed / they want me to.

Any updates on the possibilty of a Cage match on the new client? I'm sure everyone here would love to see the Villa cage match.

Sorry, not happening. MF is selling subscriptions and they have an exclusive license to online Dominion in 2016. Don't expect anything "official" (like f.ds championship matches or league matches) on our system, or matches like these that would otherwise promote their system.

Maybe we'll make an exception in the second half of December, but certainly not now.

That's sad to hear, although Empires came out in German just now so hopefully I'll get a chance to play with it soon  :)

I thought since you're not offering the service to anyone (outside of testers) yet and won't do so at any point before MF's license expires it wouldn't be any trouble, but I don't know much about this kind of stuff and I suppose it's sort of "nice" towards them.

Sweet Cage Matches you haven't done yet include:

Other potentially good candidates, not sure if these make for an interesting match:
