Copying from Diplomacy 3 because I'm lazy!!! Thanks Galz!!!
The game has reached its conclusion! Congratulations to France, Germany, and Turkey on the 3-way tie!
The powers are:
Austria: A Drowned Kernel
England: Grujah
France: Just a Rube
Germany: ghostofmars
Italy: heron
Russia: Jack Rudd
Turkey: KingZog3
The starting board is below, see the opening post for some cool Diplomacy resources and tools.
Please send me the moves by PM before the deadline (I will try to be strict yet kind, a difficult and narrow path to walk). I can also make a QT for moves submission if you prefer.
First deadline is let's say Tuesday morning 9/2, 1 am forum time. Deadlines will be 3 Days for Spring/Fall Orders, 24 Hours for Winter Builds (I will aim to keep retreats within the flow of the 7 day cycle). (Early submissions allowed and encouraged; if you change your mind at any time, new moves will be accepted up until I have posted the updated map. However you can mark your orders with FINAL if you choose, and if all players have done so, I'll update early.) If you feel that these deadlines are too short or too long at any point, let me know, and we can open up a discussion.

Let's get this trainwreck started.

I can't find you on facebook. there's a lot of Vanja Grujic's and also no alfred patak's. If you can find me, Steven Labute on facebook. If any of you want to add me that's ok I guess, just be sure to tell me so I know who you are.

Found you.
I'm this one

If you search for Vanja Grujic, I'm the one with red/green glasses.

Oh, and I'll be gone form friday afternoon till monday. So talk to me before then! Maybe we could move the deadline just till tuesday? So I can catch up and make an informed decision when i get back?
-
I'd be glad to push this deadline back a little ways. The first diplomacy phase is traditionally longer so players can get their footing, and we haven't heard yet from two of our players. How about Tuesday morning at 1 am forum time?
Any other methods of communication besides the QT are fine. But then I don't get to eavesdrop! :P
-
I have to finish reading the rules and stuff, probably will send out some stuff in a couple hours.
-
I prefer qt, but I can certainly do gchat; rwcorrell for me.
-
Should we all do what ADK did and put out flag as our picture?
Only if you want to be cool like me.
-
i'm observing! possibly commenting like I did last time.
-
i'm observing! possibly commenting like I did last time.
I don't know what the comments were like last time, but I'd rather comments no revolve around strategy, or at least anything that could affect a current turn. The wrong word could instil doubt in a person, and I'd rather that come from another player and not an observer.
But I mean, comment away :P I just want to be sure it won't mess with the game status.
-
like comment in a QT, to be released at the end of the game...I finally got around to posting that QT to the Dip3 game today.
-

Hungary feels sad. :(
-
I've sent out a prod PM to Russia. Hopefully he'll turn up in the next couple days (too much vodka, one suspects), but if not we may have to look for a sub.
-

Oh ok. Yeah, that could be interesting to read in a year from now when this is done :P
-
Also, since there don't seem to be objections I've gone ahead and moved the first deadline to Tuesday morning 9/2, 1 am forum time. Hopefully that will give ample time for communication and we can get a sub if need be.
-
I'm going to declare a 24 hour replacement warning for Jack Rudd. I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but that'll be 3 days since the start of the game, which would ordinarily be an entire turn. I want this game to not take a year, and that means being active at least once every three days.
Let me know if you'd be interested in subbing. Also, let me know if you think this is overly tyrannical. I don't like replacing people, but the show must go on.
-
I think it's fair. All other countries have been active, most with multiple posts. Rudd is only guy who hasn't said anything, or posted here even.

I would sub in!
-
I said I would sub, but I didn't mean this ealry... so let faust sub in!
-
Sorry, all. Computer is busy dying on me; I have sent in orders now.
-
Great! The Russian envoy has arrived. There may be opportunities for others to sub in later, although I hope that won't be necessary!
The deadline will remain as Tuesday 1 am for now, but as usual let me know if you'd like that changed. I don't mind granting extensions, I just don't want the game to hang in limbo, so please keep us informed of VLA and such.
-
Sorry, all. Computer is busy dying on me; I have sent in orders now.
Great to have you in. Don't forget to check all your QTs and participate in the scheming as well; that's most of the fun.
-
First turn's orders are due in about 26 hours!
-
i'm observing! possibly commenting like I did last time.
So did you decide to comment on them this time? I know I have several things already I'll be curious about when the game ends.
-
I haven't had time yet, and I dont' have access to the QTs. If Walrus gives me access to the QTs, then I might have some freetime in 3 weeks or so to pour over old material...I'd do it in chronological order so I wouldn't have any advance knowledge as i make comments, because I think that would be more interesting from my perspective anyway.
-
There's actually a link in the Speccy QT to a second Eavesdropping Speccy QT, which contains all the discussion QTs. So anyone is welcome to observe and commentate, I was even thinking of making some notes myself. However I would ask that you please don't look at any of them if you are interested in being eligible to sub.
3ish hours until deadline! Get your orders in if you haven't already.
-
We are still missing orders. You know who you are. I think I speak for all of us when I say:
ಠ_ಠ
I have sent out reminder PMs. I will be awake for another 1-2 hours, and then I will check in the morning before work as well.
-

Jeez, this is moving a bit too fast for me, I barely have time to check QTs.
-
OK...how about moving to 4 days for turns? What do people think?
-
I'm ok with any deadline. I'm checking QTs on my phone all the time, so whatever is best for other people.
-
I noticed that some people do not talk a lot in the QT. If they posted more with longer deadlines, I would be ok with extending them. For me the current speed is fine.
-

Yeah, actually I agree with this. I mean I'm ok with slowing down if people really need more time, but not if it's because people can't be bothered to check QTs. Italy and Russia are basically silent to me.
-
The current speed is fine for me, but if it will help others participate more, I'm ok with an extension.
As others said, having more conversation will probably improve the game. And if it means everyone can get their moves in on time, that's obviously a benefit as well.
-
I'm fine with current pace but if other people want to slow down I think we should. I just like to see the little circles move :P

Winter 1902 begins! The next deadline is supposed to be in 24 hours, but considering the request to lengthen turns just get them in ASAP. Shouldn't take too long; let's try to keep this game moving.
Afterwards we will probably try a 4-day move cycle, and we can still be flexible going into the future. If you ever need a one-time deadline extension for a particular turn due to temporary business or unavailabilty, let me know, that can be arranged as well.

Just a note, I'll be leaving for Florida next sunday. I'll have internet connection most likely once I'm there, but we're driving from Montreal, so Sunday/Monday I may not have access to internet.
That being said, I'm willing to accept a three way tie with the current game state.
-

I don't think, I can force a solo either, so I accept a three way tie.
-
I also agree to a 3-way draw.
Good game everybody!
-
Meeeeeeeeeeeh now Walrus wins his bet. On the other hand, liopoil loses his.
Christmas spirit, ruining games since forever.
-
BOOOO! Kingzog, you had it! :(
-
The 3-way tie has been accepted. Peace at last!
Congratulations to France, Germany, and Turkey! Well done.
Thanks for the game everyone. I had a great time moderating and I hope you enjoyed playing. Here's a link to the speccy thread if you're interested:

Thanks Walrus, I had fun playing.
I'll post a bit more on my thoughts throughout the game later. If you want to reveal the private threads, I would be fine with that.
-
There are links to the private threads in the speccy thread.
Threadcursion!

BOOOO! Kingzog, you had it! :(
Nah, we had the stalemate line all ready to go this turn.
Thanks again to everyone for playing, and to WalrusMcFishSr for moderating.
-
BOOOO! Kingzog, you had it! :(
Maybe, but I think attacking France lets Germany gain ground. I'd need to set up to get most of my centers at once, but Germany and France would see that coming a mile away.
Did the spectators have access to the other threads? I'd like to see the other countries threads.

They're linked from the first post in the spectator thread. And now I'm going to do an archive binge.

Boo hiss!
But really, good game guys.

For some closure, here's a Civilization-style retrospective on the game:

Thoughts from my first full, 7-player game:
-Breaking through the Franco-German border is hard.
-It is apparently impossible to backstab an ally without making at least one critical error (I think my mini-stab of 1-center Italy was the only one that didn't involve something going horribly wrong, though at least the Austrian retreat to Naples didn't affect anything long term).
-We actually managed a great pace; thanks again to everyone involved.
-
I really enjoyed this, despite the last couple turns neing during end of term. Still thanks for everyone who played. I'd totally like to play again, but I don't think I would have time to mod a game. During term I can sit to do orders and negotiate, but not to make sure things run smoothly.

Thoughts on the game
In the opening, I had hoped that England and France would fight each other more, in particular after the Eng opening, but England continued to press North even after France had moved several units towards him.
This lead to France being a monster after the opening and probably also to his stab. I don't know if a more conservative move eastwards would have prevented the stab, but I have the feeling France wanted to press his luck. Crucial to the eventual defense were two things: a) that I order A Ruh hold, which gave time to retreat my units and b) the successful negotiation to get StP to build the fleet to press against France. I always feared France would move more creatively (F Nth - Ska), but ultimately I could repel and even turn the tide against France.
Then came the next turning point, where I tried to ask Austria, whether he would allow me a full blown attack against France, but after he didn't reply for a few days, I guessed correctly that he would stab me. Due to the DMZ between us and the build in Berlin that he overlooked(?), I could defend here as well. What helped was that I always kept contact with France, so that a peace was treaty was easy. I still don't see the point in the attack. If Austria wants to win, it needs to attack Turkey in this situation and for a 3-way tie, you can use Germany as easy as France.
The next stab was the logical one from Turkey against Austria. I managed to grab some centers in Russia, which put me in the position were I could potentially reach a solo. It was still a long shot and I had to move forward aggressively, so that I would gain centers fast enough to fill the back of my line before Turkey would tear down Austria completely. Unfortunately, in the turn after the stab I screwed up. The annoying thing is that I would have submitted the same moves then France did in his position, but decided against the proper answer. After that I tried beating his line a bit, but without success so that I had to settle for the tie.
Random comments:
-My plan had France not stabbed me after the opening was to attack Austria and leave Turkey in peace, France would have eventually stabbed Italy and then I would need a partner to prevent a French solo
-I'm puzzled the A/T alliance worked that well, because the position on the board would have allowed for an easy 2-3 center grab immediately with the stab.
-
If you read our QT, Austria and I wanted to stay allied because we figured you guys would all be counting on a stab. This left us with time and superior forces to secure a dual victory, while you guys held less of the board, with a less secure alliance. I would have 100% followed through with this, but Austria's unsuccessful attack on Germany let France move Fleets to create a stalemate in the Med. If he had waited even 1 turn on the attack I probably could have had enough presence to keep pushing in the Med and secure Tunisia. Once the attack failed stabbing was the only way out of a 4 way tie.
I also fully trusted Austria. Only right near the beginning was there a good chance for him to stab me, but I knew Russia was a bigger threat, being both aggressive and silent.
-
Some more retrospective:
I always fully intended to stab Germany if possible; I wanted to make sure I was the only one who could build fleets outside of the Mediterranean. I was definitely counting on one of Turkey or Austria to take advantage of the war (either to hit Germany or to start fighting each other, which would leave me free from worry on that front). I had always been a little suspicious of Germany from the opening (where he seemed eager to get England and I to commit to fighting each other while he stayed on the sidelines), although once he finally committed he was solidly helpful. Also, with England dead, there was no longer an excuse for my fleets to hang out up there, so I knew it was now or never. Sadly, I botched my opening stab, and A/T seemed content to beat up on Italy while we fought each other. Ironically, Austria finally made his move right after Germany and I had effectively negotiated a peace treaty; if he had done it a few turns earlier, I probably would have continued fighting, but as it was I wasn't really in a position to capitalize.
Germany and I were talking to each other pretty much the entire time we were fighting (both times), which made it easy to guard against a Turkish or Austrian solo. Sadly my negotiations with Austria and Turkey were less strong (although I was amused, reading the QTs, that both Turkey and I decided to play the angry, hurt victim at the same time as a negotiating tactic), which may have had something to do with their decision to stay out. Like Germany, I expected the A/T alliance to fall apart when they were no longer actively fighting, which also surprised me. I had been halfway expecting the German stab (indeed, I was planning on using my next possible builds to defend against it), but it still caught me well out of position. I had initially planned on retreating to Ska (in the hopes of either tying down 2 fleets for one, or grabbing a center), but when Germany left Hol open by mistake, it was too good to resist. Which was probably what most doomed Germany's attack; if his A Ruhr had blocked me on my stab, my F Kiel (and thus avoiding losing a unit that turn) saved me from his stab. Plus I was able to work reasonably well with Turkey (who agreed not to grab Tunis/the Med until after I had stabilized my lines against Germany).
Germany and I had worked out to form another stalemate line against Turkey (which probably would have gone into effect this coming turn, especially with Turkey's somewhat threatening final moves) if the game had gone on. At the same time, I was somewhat nervous about another German stab potentially reducing me to playing kingmaker. So I was very glad when Turkey mentioned in a QT that he was planning on proposing a 3-way draw. Once again, thanks to everyone who participated; I had a lot of fun and learned a ton.
-
If there was another game, I would be in favor of staying at three-day deadlines, the four-day deadlines made it drag a little for me.
-
I also fully trusted Austria. Only right near the beginning was there a good chance for him to stab me, but I knew Russia was a bigger threat, being both aggressive and silent.
Actually, I expected you to stab him :) Immediately after he stabbed me (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=11674.msg429703#msg429703), you could have taken three of his centers within a year. I had considered to ask for it, if I hadn't managed to negotiate a peace with France. It also helped that you told me that France and Austria weren't collaborating.
Independent of that, I don't think a planned 2-way tie works out. Usually, close to the end the 3rd nation threatens to commit suicide.
I was definitely counting on one of Turkey or Austria to take advantage of the war (either to hit Germany or to start fighting each other, which would leave me free from worry on that front).
In my opinion, your biggest mistake in this game was that you didn't ask for it. Imho, you should hardly ever assume that they will act. The problem was that you were the strongest power after the opening, so that they had no incentive to help you. They may have taken some crumbs, if I had collapsed though.
I had always been a little suspicious of Germany from the opening (where he seemed eager to get England and I to commit to fighting each other while he stayed on the sidelines), although once he finally committed he was solidly helpful.
I was likewise always suspicious of your moves as well. In particular that you really pressed to leave the channel after you just took it. I had also offered you to commit to an attack in fall 1901 already, which would have worked out and hastened the downfall of England.
Ironically, Austria finally made his move right after Germany and I had effectively negotiated a peace treaty; if he had done it a few turns earlier, I probably would have continued fighting, but as it was I wasn't really in a position to capitalize.
It was the logical time for a stab. Essentially, the tides had turned against you and I was gaining ground. Perhaps a year later would have been better.
If there was another game, I would be in favor of staying at three-day deadlines, the four-day deadlines made it drag a little for me.
I agree that the faster pace in the beginning was better. I would even consider to reduce the deadlines in the mid/late game, because the alliances are more clear and there is less to coordinate.
-
I'm not sure if I would like to mod again, but I would love to play. I didn't know if people needed a cool down before starting the next one.
-
Well like I said I'll be on the road sunday, but otherwise I don't need a long cooldown. Three day deadlines are good. Maybe the first year should be longer, since tons of negotiating goes on, but many rounds, especially near the end, didn't need to be four days.
-
I don't think I'll have time for another game for a while. So I'll just watch from the sidelines ;D.
-
Oh and huge thanks to Walrus for modding!

Oh and huge thanks to Walrus for modding!
Right! Everything was really smooth. Thanks!
-
Sorry I didn't have more time to comment and say stuff; looking over Walrus's gifs, this looks like the start was super interesting. The middle/end was sort of a grind, but sometimes games get that way.
-
/bump because I'd like a new game to start. Is there anyone willing to mod?
-
If I weren't so busy I would give a shot at modding, but I don't think I could keep it organized along with all my other stuff. I could play though.
-
I'd love to play as well! I'd rather not mod twice in a row...
-
I'd love to play! I have only ever played this twice IRL, so I don't think I'm really qualified to mod though.
-
I could maaaaybe mod starting later in February when my schedule clears up a bit more, but I'd still rather play.
-
If we have no takers for mod we could run a game on another website. It'd be nice to keep it in-house and have the personal touch, but nobody should be coerced into the job.
-
Remember those good times when we played Diplomacy? Man, those were the days.
-
I'd play again
-
Still would play again as well.
-
would watch again.
-
I still want to play! (though not again)
-
I would play again.
I'm not that interested in modding a vanilla game, but if there is interest in playing a variant, I would be willing to mod.
-
I might be interested in a variant. What exactly did you have in mind?
-
I might be interested in a varient, depending on what it is. I have little experience with normal Diplomacy, so I'd be just as interested in a vanilla game.
-
I would like to try a different map. The 1900 variant is based on the standard diplomacy map with little changes to make the game more interactive.
There are only two significant rule changes compared to normal diplomacy:
a) You may move around south Africa, i.e. Egypt - Atlantic is a valid move. This move is at half strength.
b) If Russia controls only 1-3 of its homecenters (i.e. not all or none), it may have one additional unit.
A few minor rule changes are usually trivial to understand
c) There are some crossings where armies may move across water, e.g. Clyde - Ireland.
d) The colonies (Algeria and Egypt) are supply centers associated with France/England but not home centers (so no building).
The rest are changes to the map and/or starting units. Here is the map and a bit more detailed description of the reasoning behind the changes can be found here. (http://diplom.org/Online/variants/1900.html)

I'll play this map, but I'd need a better image than that and labels for the territories. Things are hard to see.

Yeah I'd be down! You should open up a sign-up thread if you feel like it. /in of course
