Title: Crafting, Legendaries, and the Relative Value of Dust
Post by: ashersky on August 12, 2014, 11:33:53 pm
So, I wanted to get a conversation going on the usage of dust.  I've creeping up on the 1600 magic number, but I wonder if it makes more sense to craft 16 rares that are very useful, or a mix of rares and epics.

For me, my Token Druid deck is what I want to have as my "main" deck, so I'd look at crafting Cenarius or Leeroy at 1600.  But I don't even have a Keeper of the Grove, you know?

What are your thoughts on crafting and the best use of a pile of dust?

I just pick a deck I'm interested in playing and only miss some pieces of, then craft those. (To purely optimize how long it takes to acquire a full collection, it's most efficient to never craft anything until you have enough dust to craft everything. But that's not very fun.)

Like, I'm missing four rares, two epics, and one legendary from my ideal deck, what's the best use of my dust?

Do I start crafting from the cheapest?  Save up for the most expensive first?

The argument for saving up is, while you are saving, you might open the more common cards.

Dont bother crafting commons unless you really have everything else already. I'd either just do a nice legendary, or epics. I don't think even rare's are that useful to craft. I have crafted a number of rares, but it's still not super efficient. A lot of the epic cards are pretty fundamental to decks, while legendaries are just icing on the cake.

I have no idea what has the best dust cost/rarity ratio, but intuitively, I would start with the most powerful cards/the cards that are the most difficult to replace with a card that you already own. I guess these are usually epics. It makes it easier to win with that deck faster, which means you get more packs/Arena faster, and that might give you the cards you are still missing or at least more dust.

If the Legendary is REALLY fundamental for the deck, such as Alexstrasza for Freeze Mage, it might be worth crafting it first. Otherwise I'd go for the epics first then rares.

Well, it depends which cards you're missing. What are they?

Worthwhileness to craft is a mix of:
1. Importance in the desired deck.
2. Reusability in future decks.
3. Cheapness.

For example, for the ones you've mentioned:

Cenarius:
Importance: Medium? He's strong but not the defining card of token druid.
Reusability: Low. Class-specific and not even run in every druid deck.
Cheapness: Legendary.

Keeper:
Importance: High? A key tool vs aggro and the silence is versatile.
Reusability: Medium. Class-specific but played in every druid deck.
Cheapness: Rare.

Contrary to some other opinions, I would absolutely craft key commons. I didn't open even one Harvest Golem for a while and haven't regretted crafting two.

I also think about what could substitute.  I think Cenarius is in fact easier to substitute than KotG in a weird way.

If the rare or epic you want is a neutral, that's a really good cause for crafting it.  I can't imagine crafting a class-specific legendary.

I'd totally craft King Krush. Al'Akir has served me really well though. If you are crafting a class legendary, I'd pick him. The others you can live without. Edwin is probably also a good craft candidate too.

I'd say Velen and Crush are least useful class ones.

I haven't crafted much, but what I have crafted are rare and common cards that can considerably improve my deck for low relatively low dust values. Examples include 2 Bloodsail Raiders for my Warrior deck, and a Savannah Highmane for my Hunter deck.

Also, you might want to hold off of spending too much dust until after Naxx ends. There might be some challenges that are made much easier with a certain card. I had crafted a Earthen Farseer for Heroic Maexxna.

If you want to run an ideal Miracle Rogue deck, Edwin matters (but isn't vital, unlike Leeroy). I crafted him for miracle and don't regret it.

Crafting priority is super subjective. Usually, I craft cards that are useful to me right away (I crafted 2 UtH for Naxxramus), or are key to making a deck work (such as Auchenai for Priest to deal with aggro.)

The "safest" craft is probably 1 copy of an epic card you want to use, since you can still open a 2nd copy and not regret the craft. The problem is that you usually need 2 copies to make the deck good. Only running, say, 1 Molten Giant or 1 Ancient of Lore isn't that great. But, if you're worried about wasting dust, I think that's your best option.

1 cabal shadow priest is fine. You don't need to run 2, although a lot of the new nax cards are yummy targets for cabal.

I went with 1 Force of Narure, 2 Keepers of the Grove, and 1 Druid of the Claw that I'd been missing for awhile.
