Title: No Place Like Home rule change
Post by: ipofanes on July 11, 2014, 05:34:02 am
As of the most recent rule version, you don't draw a city if you have one in hand.

I think the game changed for the better by the rule. It poses new challenges as to how to get rid of your cards, and removes some mechanics that make some games explode, like gaining multiple cities over splaying a stack to and fro during the execution of an echo stack.

Also, the publisher has announced that the physical version will eventually be released, but they are feeling this expansion is not quite there yet. I agree with this impression, but the rule change was s step in the reight direction.

That is an interesting change. I like it as well. :)

A move for the better, IMO. Anything to make cities games less crazy.

I still think cities make the games too spammy though. IMO the endorsement should, instead of giving you a double-dogma for 1 action, give you a single-dogma for 0 actions. And then both that city and that dogma can't be used for the rest of the turn. That would push more variety into actions rather than endorse, industry, industry, industry.

did they make any mention about changing cities exclusive goal? i still think scoring 3 points for melding a city with both an arrow and a flag is really really really dumb

the cities that expand you tend to make the game end very quickly.

Expand as in Expansion decree, i.e. splay up?

i mean, one thing i like about base innovation, which i think is preserved in echoes and to a lesser extent in figures, is that on a fundamental level you have to choose between tech-based and score-based strategies. and so in the base set, if you are winning the whole game and then suddenly your opponent pulls off some computers--->bioengineering--->win crap, well, you can be a little annoyed, but not really, because were you really "winning the whole time" if you had more achievements but you let the game last long enough that your opponent melded computers? in essence you weren't covering your bases, and you "deserve" to lose once in a while. (in my mind it is similar to when a dominion player with a better strategy fails to seal the deal after splitting the curses 7-3... the game rewards technique and perfection).

now it's true that figures gives a big push to the tech-based strategies, but to me it doesn't seem to break the game. with cities such that, simply by melding them, i draw a card from the next age, it starts to feel a little lopsided.

this is incoherent. still posting.
