It has always bothered me that it says "You may marry your opponent" rather than "You may marry the player to your left".  I mean, what if it's a 3-player game, how do I know which player to marry?

It's irritating being friends with someone who doesn't have a facebook account or whatsapp. Organizing anything for them or including them in activities becomes so much more tedious when some people choose to opt out of avenues of contacting groups of people with one shot.

Realtalk: (Confession?) It's strange and disorienting to receive emails from friends or really anyone my age unless I am expecting one. As convenient and relatively young as the technology is, it is pretty outmoded among the young people I've talked to.

It's irritating being friends with someone who doesn't have a facebook account or whatsapp. Organizing anything for them or including them in activities becomes so much more tedious when some people choose to opt out of avenues of contacting groups of people with one shot.
uh. eh. *several sounds of disagreement*. there are emails which you can send to several people, if you would just use that instead of crud like facebook you wouldn't have such problems in the first palce

Realtalk: (Confession?) It's strange and disorienting to receive emails from friends or really anyone my age unless I am expecting one. As convenient and relatively young as the technology is, it is pretty outmoded among the young people I've talked to.

How is it strange? It's just another way of communicating. That's like saying texting or calling is strange.

There's nothing inherently strange about email, it's just strange because it's unusual and unexpected. Kind of like how it'd be strange if my boss texted me about a new company policy rather than emailing. It's just about different expected communication channels for different contexts. I'm completely used to sending and receiving emails in a professional (or when I was a student, academic) context, but outside of that and a dozen assorted websites who email me from time to time, it's not the norm for me.

I almost never used email to communicate with friends while I was in college. I use it a bit more now, but I definitely agree with Dsell -- I would be a little taken aback if a friend send me an email rather than a facebook message. Not that it's a bad thing to use email, it's just not what anyone I know used.

This is true for me as well. So much so that I actually check my mail like twice a month these days - there's just never anything urgent in there. I communicate with friends via f.ds pm's much more often than with email.

Say I wake up at 10, notice it's a rare sunny day outside and think to myself "man, it would be fun to go play sports with friends". In the age of whatsapp and facebook, I just make a quick post declaring this in our "summer sports" whatsapp group, all 20 of my potentially interested friends see it instantly and respond whether they can make it or not, and if 8 or more can, we probably go and play before noon, which almost always is the case. Same goes for viewing parties for World Cup (trying to find a bar where a group bigger than five can fit is often cumbersome and requires some coordination), or organizing a house party, or really any number of more or less time-sensitive events where you invite more than a couple of people. It's just really inefficient to call everyone separately to ask if they want to come, and then call them back every time the plan changes even slightly.

whatsapp is just an improved version of text messaging really. it's free (almost everyone has a data plan on their phone these days) and allows creating groups and messaging multiple people at once.

i understand not wanting to use facebook's main functions, but it's quite handy for organizing events for example. I have a couple of friends who are there under a pseudonym only to receive invites/to partake in planning things.

There's definitely a trend with people I know using facebook's core functionality much less than we used to. While I still use it for event organizing, pictures, and occasionally chat, I barely write on anyone's wall anymore -- everyone I know uses their wall much less than when facebook was getting started. This is resulting in less social media use overall, rather than a shift to a different medium -- people I know use facebook/social media significantly less than we did 1-2 years ago. Funnily enough, this coincided with everyone's parents getting on facebook.

Most of my friends aren't on f.ds.   :'(

But continuing the off-topic conversation that has nothing to do with anyone getting engaged:  I use facebook almost exclusively to communicate events and group messages to certain groups of friends.  I don't even know most of my friend's email addresses, but sending them a quick PM on facebook is extremely convenient.  I only have 5 actual "status updates" this year.  And I don't do facebook games.  Dominion is enough for me.  (and I have been dabbling with Hearthstone a bit recently)

I deleted my facebook account when I was 14. It's definitely saved me a lot of time that I would have wasted.

Man, when I was 14, Mark Zuckerberg was still reading Dr. Suess.

The main reason I have a Facebook is because its much easier to stay connected with people. Instead of trying to collect everyone's phone number, I can just friend them on Facebook and send them a message. It also makes it much easier to organize things (though ironically, most of my closer friends don't even have an account).

I used to update my status every week or so, but I now I only post pictures of memorable events or the occasional one-liner. I think my reduced posting has to do with the increase of my time spent on f.ds. Which is a good thing, I think. Being a part of a community like this is much more enjoyable than aimisly scrolling down my newsfeed.

It's weird that it's sort of become cool to hate on Facebook now.  People talk dismissively of how they prefer "real" social interaction, implying that Facebook social interaction is somehow "less real" than texting, phone calls, or postcards, or that these things are mutually exclusive somehow.

Facebook is just a tool, like every other mode of communication.  It is whatever you choose to make of it.  Some things are easier to share with your friends through Facebook than through any other medium.

I use Facebook all day, every single day, but almost always only for work. It's funny, when I hear people say, "Oh, I don't like FB, I don't want to use it." Oh, to have that luxury! I use it almost exclusively to share and promote my articles and media career. In fact, I often feel like the personal details I share are largely in service of the professional goal of advancement and publicity.

I'm sure it's quite annoying for people who friend me on FB because they actually wanted to be my friend.

Heh, neither are mine of course, but I've literally never received a single email from a friend, so forum pm exchanges are still infinitely more common.

I wholeheartedly agree with theory in facebook being what you make it out to be. It's a great tool for many social interactions, some people suck at it but that's why they have unfriend/hide features.

I got Facebook when my volunteer group asked me to get one so I can be added to a private Facebook group for communication. Made things way easier. And of course, now I don't need a friend to text me whenever an outing or event is being planned on Facebook.

I don't have that many FB friends, so I'm able to keep up with my news feed daily.

Indeed. I am a staff editor at a libertarian magazine of politics, news, and culture. Previously I was an education reporter for a DC-based national news website. I cover higher education broadly, some K-12 stuff like zero tolerance and Common Core standards, criminal justice reform, and television.

I agree it is just a tool. A bad one. And it is NOT whatever you choose to make of it. It is whatever you choose out of the options a single company chooses to give you. At least phone and email are a bit decentralized. If Google decides to stop providing me with an email service I like, I can switch to another company (or even host one myself) and keep communicating with the same set of people without interruption, even if they continue to like their current service. Switching away from facebook requires everyone you want to communicate with to make the same change, which is something unlikely to happen. Facebook basically keeps everyone hostage.

EDIT: It is that monopolistic-y situation that enables Facebook's horrifying practices, like selling your data.

Technologies come with inherent biases on how they should be used. You can say a car is a tool and that it is what you make of it, but in practice it doesn't work out that way. It doesn't make much sense to have a car just to drive somewhere that is three houses away or to use it as big stool. The car has had a net effect of making stretching the distance of everything. Our towns and cities would not have been built the way were (large and spaced out) if cars weren't so ubiquitous.

Similarly, the way Facebook is presented, with its interface and its options, influence how it will be used. I remember when the privacy options were not made obvious to users. Also, "tldr" has mostly been replaced by link-bait with rather uninformative headers.

Clearly, Facebook is not conducive to the kinds of intense discussions we have on forums like f.ds.

On a side note, the respect system we have here at f.ds has made me apathetic to Facebook "likes". Why should I care about something that doesn't accumulate and whose total is not shown next to my avatar or something? It's a good thing likes aren't recorded that way, actually. One less thing for people to obsess about.

I think +1s here are overrated as an accumulated measure, especially when most of it comes from memes. I would prefer to not have accumulated respect showing next to the avatar, so +1s can serve for saying "I agree" in a concise manner. In a forum I used to participate in, and admin specifically say they avoided giving stats about how many +1s (or -1s, which said forum had) a given user had, precisely to avoid +1s becoming an evaluation of a user instead of a post.

I wouldn't say they're overrated. It's a well known fact that most respect comes from jokes and hosting tournaments. It's a good measure for how funny your jokes are. Ironically, having a low post-to-respect ratio could be an indication that you predominantly post serious stuff, like Dominion analysis.

This thread is really derailing. To keep things on topic: I got engaged.

Ok, ok, you people are obviously just doing it for the free respect at this point.

You know me. I'm all about that respect. ;) I got engaged for real, though. To the reigning swedish Dominion champion.

Securing a formidable opponent for life, eh? My sincere congratulations! ;D
Just think about the champions they'll breed in the future.
Wait, are you a Lamarckian eeveelutionist?

Falling in love with a true competitor like that is something I'm personally waiting for. Congrats!

We've talked about this. If they don't get at least nearly perfect IV's, we'll just release them. :)

I would imagine Pokemon undergo Lamarckian rather than Darwinian evolution...

You can't both post in this thread and get respect.  That's double-dipping.

If we join the line of time at plus infinity and minus infinity, time becomes periodic, and future and past become one and the same, modulo some length of time. So if I get engaged in the future, then I got engaged already!

Sorry to hear that bro.  It sucks when it happens but truly, each past relationship I had in some way shaped me to be the person who I am today.  They made me capable of loving my wife as she needed to be loved and prepared me to be the person for her.

So yeah, getting dumped is not fun ever.  But take time to heal and let what you learn shape future relationships.

And listen to KingZog and play Dominion.  :)

2014:  I hate Facebook, it takes all of the interaction out of interacting with people!
2004:  Look, I know you like email, but man, I want to have a real conversation on the phone!  It's not like you're not carrying a phone with you all the time.
1994:  A portable phone?  Really, dude, can't you just use the phone at home like a normal person?
1934:  I hate these telephones.  If you really need to interact with someone at a long distance, can't you send a telegraph?
1894:  Why should you need a telegraph?  Is a written letter not fast enough or good enough for you?
BCE 2004:  Have you seen this writing stuff?  It's ridiculous.  Kids won't be able to remember their oral history anymore with this!
BCE 54004:  Word?  Language?  Grunt not good enough for you?

A little late, but this reminds me of this xkcd comic (http://xkcd.com/1227/) which uses real comments from people of the times.

I got engaged last night!  My girlfriend flew out to visit for a surprise visit, I had already bought the ring, and so I ended up one-upping her with a surprise engagement.

So I take it either you or her will be moving, as to avoid a marriage where you have to "fly out" to see each other?

I am engaged! The main outdoor plan worked, but my backup plan in case of rain was to write “Will You Marry Me?” on a blank Dominion card, use Tournament in a seemingly random game, and pull the card out when I won a prize. When I mentioned this backup plan to my fiancée afterwards, she said “You could have also used Masquerade and passed it to me.” So you see how lucky I am.  ;D

1. Hide Dominion blank card saying "will you marry me" below the Curse pile.
2. Make sure the game has Ruins so three piles cost $0.
3.Set up a King's Court-Masquerade-Bishop-Fortress-Militia pin that gets you points and trashes your soon-to-be's deck, making buying the piles empty the only way to end the game and escape the misery.
4. ? ? ?
5. Profit

In all seriousness, though: Congratulations, guys.

Hide it at the bottom of the Silver pile in a Masterpiece game.
