Baseball is something I would be super interested in if it were shown at decent times here in the UK.

It's like a more stat based cricket!

I like the Mets but with no Matt Harvey this year I don't expect them to do much at all, as usual. The Marlins, on the other hand, could be on their way up with Fernandez.

For the record, I also dont think the mets are doing anything this year, even if they had harvey. They are not a great team. But it's opening day. And if there's one thing opening day stands for, it's irrational optimism.

True. Bryce Harper hit two home runs in last year's opening day. So that means he's hitting three today, right?

Dude... what happened last year?

-We had no Left Fielder - (Blanco? Torres? Both much to spotty, especially platooned)

-Our Center Fielder (and lead off hitter) got injured - (Losing Pagan was big)

-Our Second Baseman (and number 2 hitter) got injured - (Like Pagan, Scutaro going out hurt. His contact % at the plate is huge, even without any pop in his bat)

-Our Third Baseman was fat - (There's a broken record. Here's hoping Sandoval can hold up and give us a FA walk year to remember, even if we don't keep him)

-Our First Baseman has yet to convert promise into productivity - (I love Belt as much as the next guy. He's not quite a JT Snow, but he's decent. But when he slumps, he slumps hard, and he can't seem to break into hot streaks with consistency)

-Our Catcher can't handle 162 behind the dish - (Well, who can? Still, Posey needs more time at 3B (likely in 2015 if Sandoval leaves) or 1B (possible if Belt doesn't step it up this year. Regardless, he just couldn't maintain star power last season)

- Zito was Zito

- Lincecum is still trying to find himself. His second half was promising, and we'll see how that transitions into this year.

- Vogelsong was injured, but regressed heavily from his 2012 campaign even before that.

- Cain slumped a little his first year of his new contract. Not in a way that is TOO concerning, but it's another drop in the bucket of 2013.

- On the plus side, Bumgarner was good. So was Pence. Crawford's defense remains some of the best in the league at SS, even if he can't hit.

So yeah. Injures to the top of our lineup (Leadoff and #2) were big setbacks, no left fielder, and 2+ subpar starting pitchers left us nowhere to go.

As for the 2014 campaign...

Well, Hudson isn't Zito, so that's a plus. Lincecum DID have a better second half last year, and if he turns a corner that'll be a bonus as well. Vogelsong I still expect to be a weak spot in our rotation, but he's proved the critics wrong before, so we'll see. Our lineup hasn't really improved all that much. Getting Pagan back is big, but we still don't have a #2 hitter. Neither Pence nor Belt really fit the bill (Pence is a little better, but both have big holes in their swings). Sandoval will be primed for a good year (hopefully. Contracts talk production). Posey will remain a .300 hitter, but isn't likely to see .330 again until he gets out from behind the dish. I'm not sold on Morse in LF, Crawford still can't hit at SS, and 2B is a hole for the foreseeable future.

So.... yeah. We might be able to scrap by with decent threats in our lineup #1-#6, but #7-#9 are going to be outs waiting to happen. If they manage to turn the lineup over, we'll have a good season. If they convert to the outs they're slated to be, we'll struggle.

Damn, that's pretty rough, but I'm rooting for them. My family is from SF, I'm the first one born on the east coast. Everyone was groaning about losing Morse last year but I don't see him as all that valuable. Is he starting in LF now?

Mariner fan here....

Remember way back in 1998 when there was the Home Run Record competition between Sosa (cheater), McGuire (bigger cheater) and Griffey (the purest hitter in baseball)?

Yeah that was about as good as it has ever been for a Mariner fan. Although 2001 was pretty good too and then we had to play against NY in the ALCS after 9/11. Never stood a chance at that and have never done anything remotely close to good since then.

I am at the point in my fandom with them that I ignore them until the All-Star Break. If they have a winning record at that point I start paying attention, if not I continue ignoring them. It is the only way to make it not so painful....

They have a chance! I am yet to watch a game this year (I'll probably hold out until for watching a playoff game if they get it) but looks like their pitching staff found some depth beside Hernandez and their offense is looking pretty good. They are doing really well for being in a tough division with the A's and Angels. (Although both of the Texas teams have been awful). All of a sudden it is a good time to be sports fan in Seattle after decades of misery.

How's the Tribe doing? I haven't been following MLB lately.

Pretty average season. Long shot for the remaining wild card position (one is certain to go to the second place team in the West). If both Seattle/Detroit plummet they could sneak in (have to get passed Toronto and New York as well), but right now I don't see anyone making it in but those one of those two.

I think that happened to a Nats starter last year, can't remember who though, maybe it was Zimm. Final out and someone smacks a double down the right field line. That happened to Yu Darvish last year too and he just laughed and shook it off. I respect that.

I kinda want to defend Williams here. Even though I disagreed with his call to pull Zimm and insert Storen given the situation, I certainly don't think he (and as a byproduct Storen) deserve all the anger and hate their getting.

Yes, the move backfired, and that's hard to watch as a fanbase. It's made even harder by both the recent dominance of Zimm, but more by the memorable collapse of Storen previously.

Zimm did not look great in his walk to Panik. He was squeezed in the zone early, but it appeared to rattle him a little bit and his next few pitches were way off. Williams knew this game was a must win for his team, and he had a closer in Storen who had been absolutely lights out down the stretch. Zimm pitched an amazing game. So did Kershaw for the Dodgers until he blew up.

Storen did not fail his manager or his team. If asked, I'm sure he would make the same pitches a second time through to the same hitters. Posey stretched out and flipped the head of the bat at a pitch away, just managing to make enough solid contact to dunk it into shallow left center. It wasn't driven, and Posey didn't have much balance in his swing. Sandoval fell behind in the count himself, before putting on a Pablo'esque swing (off balance as well, ball off the plate) to punch one barely fair down the line.

Storen got unlucky. Good hitters hit good pitches. Nothing more. Nothing less. To demonize Williams for going with his closer, someone that he MUST have complete trust in, in a game his team MUST win, is really unfair to him. Likewise, to demonize Storen for getting beat on good pitches just because he had a meltdown in the past does him a disservice.

Would I have kept in Zimm? Yes, absolutely. But I can't fault Williams for the choice he made.
Title: Re: Baseball!
Post by: AndrewisFTTW on October 05, 2014, 12:37:46 pm
I think Storen was the right choice but I also don't know what Zimm's pitch count was. You're right though he did look a little off with that walk. Storen should've been able to get the job done but sometimes good hitters will put good swings on it. But so much of the game was the lack of offense. Three of the Nats' top hitters were 0 for 7. You can't win games like that.

He was 96 pitches, I believe.

Posey's hit was on a great pitch.  Pablo got a slightly better one to hit.  Great throw to home by Harper to save the game.

I stick with Zimm, but I don't fault the call to the closer.  10/10 in save opps since August.

The Orioles have a ton of power. But man, you still gotta get a pitch to hit in order to knock it out. The Royal's scare me. It feels like 1 thru 9, a single or a walk is essentially a triple - and when you're a base hit or an error away from a run constantly... yikes.

85 WS Champs vs 83 WS Champs. Good matchup, fun for both fanbases.

As much as I want to see Orioles vs Giants in the WS, I'm going to predict KC in 5, maaaaybe 6 in the ALCS. Speed + Small Ball > Power. I like KC pitching more as well.

Unless the Giants bats come screaming to life tomorrow to back Vogelsong (blargh), thus series looks like it's headed back to DC, Strasburg vs Peavy in a winner take all. I wouldn't count the Nat's out yet. There is still a strong chance they go on.

Unless the Giants bats come screaming to life tomorrow to back Vogelsong (blargh), thus series looks like it's headed back to DC, Strasburg vs Peavy in a winner take all. I wouldn't count the Nat's out yet. There is still a strong chance they go on.

..... Assuming Storen can make his outs here.

I'm glad Storen got out of that himself, he needed that. I haven't been following Vogelsong, is he really that spotty this year? I'm a little wary of Strasburg, he was great in the second half and he wasn't terrible in Game 1 but if Peavy dominates again we need Strasburg to bring it.

Vogelsong:

8-13, 4.00 ERA
178 Hits, 58 Walks, 151 SO in 184.2 Innings Pitched.
18 Home Runs, 32 Starts

Just really... meh. He hasn't often given his team a chance to win, and that's what you really need.

Pretty sure he can deal with it, given how insane he is during the regular season.  Maybe that's his payment for his deal with the devil.

Cueto, Zimmerman, etc. will never win CYAs with him in the NL.

Yeah very close but still, Span, Werth, and LaRoche combined for, what? Four hits?  Our pitching was excellent, our offense not so much.

Yes, it was. He didn't go.

I think the bad part was just not going to the 1st base ump.  I mean, they go to the 1st base ump like 80 times a game.  He shouldn't have made that call on his own.

I mean, that's baseball (and all sports).  It still has to suck for Desmond, especially, as he'll be imagining all the what ifs.

All that matters now is that to repay the world for this, the Giants demolish the Cardinals by 77 runs in 4 games straight.

Yeah, I posted when it was 4-1. Things improved greatly. It's been an awesome series. The back and forth has been intense. I'm hoping desperately for a Bumgarner win tomorrow to go back to KC on. It's entirely possible this thing goes 7. Exciting (if terrifying)!

Yeah I had a feeling I spelled it wrong.

Game 7! I'm putting my money on KC, sorry Galz.

Not unreasonable. I'll be really sad if my Giants lose, but then, if they do, you kinda have to think they deserve it. I mean, Bumgarner alone makes this a 5 game series, where KC needs to win 4. If the Giants can't prevent going 1-4 in "the other 5 games", well... I've got to tip my cap to KC, and shake my head at my Giants.

Still, I'm not counting them out, and the series isn't over. I expect Hudson to start tomorrow, with a 1 run leash. Bumgarner will be very early out of the bullpen, if he's needed. If Hudson goes longer, Bum will be used in the 6th/7th, with Romo/Casilla I'm the 8th/9th.

Unless KC throws another shutout though, they'll have to get through Bumgarner relieving Hudson after 1 run allowed.

Nate silver analyzing if Alex Gordon should have tried for home.

Had he:

A) Been running to first expecting extra bases, and not just a single

and

B) Not been slowing up heading into third (all the photos showing where he was vs the ball, are all AFTER he rounds third, and thus AFTER he was slowing down)

Then yes, he would've made it easily. Neither of those things happened, and so the question of if he would have made it given where things actually were is a lot closer. Crawford was deep. It would've taken a strong and accurate throw. He's more than capable of it. The real question, is did you have a better chance of scoring a run by sending him, or by counting on somebody else to get a hit off Bumgarner.

Send the runner.
Title: Re: Baseball!
Post by: jonts26 on October 30, 2014, 03:49:46 pm
Silver said to send him even if you estimate only a 30% success rate. Also to be fair he was slowing going into third because he got the stop sign. But he really needed to hustle out of the box.

Title: Re: Baseball!

Deadspin analyzed it and concluded that it would have taken another throwing error for Alex Gordon to have made it there.  Of course, he could have ran harder out of the gate, but he probably still would have paused at first because he couldn't have predicted that fielding error.

Of course, going for it would have cemented him a place in baseball lore and definitely been the more exciting ending.
Title: Re: Baseball!
Post by: HiveMindEmulator on October 30, 2014, 04:40:21 pm
One big problem is that if you're the base coach and you send him and he's out, you're the goat, even if you were playing the percentages correctly. And if he makes it, well no one cares about the base coach. So that guy's incentives are not completely aligned with those of the team/fans. But yeah, Gordon should have been running hard to first and then scored. Bumgarner would then of course have to pitch like 3 more shut out innings before the Giants would score and win.

Anyway, this play is the story for nerdy analysts and KC fans. For everyone else, it's just a footnote in the real story of the greatest postseason pitching performance in MLB history.

Baseball IS back!

Let's see....

My Giants will be bad this year (ridiculous "odd-year" argument aside - they just don't have a solid team).

The Padres will be fun to watch.

Having grown up in Chicago, and this being 2015, I'm going to be a Cubs fan all year long.

I would love to see a Red Sox / Cubs World Series. Truly the only two classic parks left. Feel the History!

And as always...:

Anybody except the Yankees.
Anybody except the Dodgers.
The Cardinals are ok, but Cubs are better.
Detroit in the AL Central (I've had a soft spot ever since Sparkyball).
I like the Mets, but don't care all that much about the NLE.
And the division I'm always the most torn about: ALW. I like the Angels. Always have. But the A's are fun too. And I know so many of their fans... And Seattle? They just have such a quietness to them... they're exiting to see succeed. I would not be disappointed to see this division send 3 teams this year.

That Tulo trade made so little sense for Colorado. I get that his all-but-begging to be traded away might be bringing the clubhouse down, but he's still a valuable asset when healthy - enough so that there were likely going to be much stronger offers on the table for him from teams willing to take that gamble. It just seemed like they threw in the towel with him and gave him a "Fine! You want to be traded? Here!" to the first suitor that came calling.

Also, since it hasn't been mentioned here yet: The Slide.

Dirty or not, I'm confused about how in the world he could be ruled safe (I'm not really, and he wasn't).

Given neither player, offense or defense touched the bag:

A) Neighborhood Rule
B) Reasonable path to the bag

- If it is ruled that a defensive player was carried away from the bag by the momentum of the play (thus (A) is not in effect), how can (B) still be true given the slide?

That is, if a player is close enough to the bag for a take out slide to be deemed legal, then by default he should be close enough for the Neighborhood Rule to apply.

You can't have both "Too far away for the Neighborhood Rule" & "Close enough to be considers going for the bag".

Utley was out - the only determination that should've been made is whether or not the batter-runner should've been ruled out as well over Utley interfering. If Tejada was too far away for the Neighborhood Rule to be in effect, then both Utley and the batter should've been ruled out. If Tejada was in fact close enough to the bag for the Neighborhood Rule, then Utley's slide, while high, hard and late, is just baseball.

Personally I feel that only Utley should've been ruled out. I didn't like the slide, and it's unfortunate that Tejada broke his leg, but both players were undoubtedly within the vicinity of the bag. Despite neither actually touching it, both could have with adjustments of inches. Tejada should've been awarded the out.
Title: Re: Baseball!
Post by: jonts26 on October 13, 2015, 10:45:39 pm
So the "slide" was really closer to a tackle. Utley started his slide past the base and went in rolling at the legs. A slide is generally feet or head first. But those types of moves are very inconsistently called. I've seen less egregious offenses be called interference, and worse ones not called. But I have never seen the lead runner called safe. It's beyond absurd. Also absurd, MLB suspended Utley. So tell me how a clean, non-interference slide deserves a suspension? Overall, it was an absolute terrible call, which may have cost the Mets the game, and if the Mets don't win the series, you'll be hearing a lot more about this call all winter.

This city is going to explode. I work within the "fallout zone" for Wrigley (and only moved outside of it recently).

At the barbershop, a 70 year old man and a 7 year old boy were each getting their hair cut in different chairs.  No relation.  I noticed each of them was talking to their respective barbers about baseball.

It was kinda cool.  I don't have any knowledge of baseball or anything to actually add to this thread.

I'll still root for the Mets over either AL club,  although it's close with the Royals.

I'm still pulling for the Jays to make it through. Glad the Mets are through for sure though. To be honest once it got to the final four teams I was already pretty happy.

Congrats the the Royals. That sucked. But losing the world series is better than losing earlier I suppose.

yes?  I am interested to see if they continue to enjoy success similar to the Red Sox after they ended their curse back in '04

The cubs will always be remembered as the team that broke the longest drought that's will ever happen in sports

The thing that made me laugh about this World Series is that Mini-Mart was the final batter.

On the Phillies, we had this utility player for three years (read: three years too long) named Michael Martinez who was just surprisingly bad. My dad did not like him; one time I literally heard him scream in the other room because Martinez was back on the team. He became somewhat of a meme among Phillies fans because of how bad he was, and we called him Mini-Mart because he was short.
Finally, he somehow left the Phillies and ended up on the Indians. When the Indians got to the Series, a lot of Phillies fans jokingly predicted that Mini-Mart would drive in the walk-off run in the last game of the World Series. So you can imagine our surprise when he was up with two outs in the 10th inning of Game 7, down by one run with runners on base. Was this finally Mini-Mart's moment? Would Phillies fans forever regret hating him? No, of course he grounded out and order was restored to the world of baseball. But for a brief moment all of us Phillies fans held our breath because Mini-Mart was somehow deciding the fate of one of the most important Series in the history of baseball.

OMG that's hilarious. I'm a tigers fan and we used to have have Rajai Davis Last year and he was so bad that he got sent to double AA and then he comes up in the world series and hits the Game tying Home Run LOL

The giant annoyance of this whole Cubs thing is that everyone is ignoring the fact that the Cubs were (are) the best team in baseball this year, and probably will be for the following decade.  They were universally (almost) chosen to win the World Series this year, so this win is the definition of the most anti-climactic ending to a season possible.

The Cubs were by no means the saddest team in baseball, and haven't been for quite some time.  They were in the playoffs last year, they'd won the division three times in the past twenty years (or less?).

In the same way, the Indians were no sadder -- they got to lose the World Series in 1997.  At least they were an underdog rife with injuries and sadness.

I'm not a fan of either team, specifically, so no dog in this fight.  I'm happy for Bill Murray, though.

I am.  I just think it's sad that everyone acts like there aren't fans of other teams that are in the same (relative) position.  A lifetime is less than 108 years -- there are plenty of fans alive that have never seen a Pirates World Series, or a Mariners World Series.

And never, ever will... At least not with Ken Griffey Jr., which was all that I ever really wanted.

Yeah but not 108

108 is a meaningless number -- I doubt there are any living Cubs fans who saw the last World Series win.  All that matters is what you said: "in their lifetime."

Or Ichiro.  But I agree, Junior was awesome.
