EDIT: Live streaming for my GokoDom III matches is a go! See this post (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=10264.msg337543#msg337543) for the "code of conduct" I'll be holding myself to -- if anyone else wants to stream tournament matches I think this is a good thing to try and do, at least as a starting point.
The purpose of this thread is to talk about what's cool and not cool for live streaming Dominion tournament matches, but ALSO to give streamers and viewers an opportunity to coordinate. If anyone plans on streaming their tournament matches for GokoDom III, post when you'll be streaming and how people can find you (and feel free to post a reminder here just before you're about to go live in case that helps out!) If you want to try and watch some live streams on tournament matches, feel free to tag this thread or whatever helps you if you don't want to subscribe on Twitch.
...and now to your regularly scheduled OP:
So I'm thinking I might want to live stream my tournament matches. I wanted to make sure that potential issues from doing this are OK with everybody. I'm happy just making videos and posting them later if it's going to be a problem.
1. People could potentially see my hand and/or hear my strategy if they were watching my stream while playing the match.
Well to be honest I'm not concerned too much about that. There roughly a 30 second delay and since this tournament will consist mostly of forum people I don't think people would really do that; plus, I think it's not really an advantage in most cases so I'm willing to take whatever disadvantage that would offer.
2. People in the chat could potentially be giving me advice during the match.
Yeah this one might be a big deal. I mean, I can just ignore the chat while I'm playing (of course that defeats most of the purpose of live streaming but I'd still probably do that). I could ask people not to give strategic commentary on games currently in progress. But neither of these things are really enforceable; even though there will be video evidence of it if I decide to "cheat" it's still technically possible for me to be super-shady and make it not noticeable.
I always ask permission from my opponents before making even a video of any of my tournament matches, just in case, and I plan to do the same here, so if that's a solution everybody is OK with then I can do that as well, but I'd understand if we just wanted to do a blanket ban on live streaming for this tournament. That's why I'm asking. Any thoughts are welcome and I'll respect whatever Kirian decides.
On the other hand, I'd really like to find a niche for live streaming Dominion and from the start I always thought tournament matches would be one of the best things for it. There's the same allure of watching your favorite sports team live because anything can happen.
-

.....

I think you should ignore chat while playing. I think the purpose of live-streaming of tournament match is different than your normal stream, it is more like watching football match and university lecture. And people in chat can answer each other if someone don't understand something and also talk freely about your strategy (and possible better strategies).

Yeah, this. Or enforce a 2-3 minute delay.
-
Is there a way to allow your opponent to see the chat from the live stream? That would solve the fairness problem.
-
I think if you can force a 2-minute delay, that's probably sufficient.
-
I'm not aware of any way to force a delay; perhaps there is something in OBS (Open Broadcasting Software) that I'm not aware of -- I'm definitely not very familiar with the software.
If this is not possible, am I OK if I ignore the chat during games? I'd probably do that even if I could force a delay.

Personally I see no problem with any of this. Even if you do discuss strategy with other people, I could easily be playing with a friend sitting next to me. Also, I trust people from the forum not to cheat (in some way using the live streaming). Why would even want to cheat? It defeats the entire purpose of why people enjoy Dominion.

So that says it's enabled for professional players by request. That sounds like something I have to pay for :-\ A brief search and I can't immediately find how to enable this. Of course I can dig a little harder when I get home tonight.

This is true enough. I mean... let's face it, the absolute worst result here is that Adam's opponent gets a slight advantage. I don't see how that harms the tournament except for Adam, and, well, he's not exactly being coerced into doing this!
-

http://skyride.org/2013/09/obs-streaming-tutorial/ - it's quite long, but search for "delay" and it shows how to do it with OBS.

Brilliant. This is exactly what I needed, I'd like to think I could have eventually found that on my own. :-[
So when I stream tournament matches I'll use a two minute delay and I won't look at the chat while I'm playing (only in between games). I'll also be asking permission from each of my opponents (like I always do for making videos) and I'll probably refer them to this post for details.
Videos from my matches should eventually make it to my YouTube channel as well. I hope other people will consider doing this too.
Maybe we could use this thread as a place to post when our matches are scheduled so it's easier for people to watch? I'll probably post here when my matches are scheduled and right before I'm about to go live.
-
I will try and stream mine. I don't know what's going to happen IRL, though.
-
I think you should just ignore the chat. The delay won't help, as someone saying "look, he is depleting the Curse pile with his Goons Buys, he seems to be unaware that the opponent's Vineyards just went up" can easily be useful 2 minutes later. And some turns can easily be longer than 2 minutes (SP especially, but also some complicated engines).
I would personally trust you to ignore the chat. I know is awful not being able to comment live, but I would not like you commenting live in the chat, because that would distract you from the game making it unnecessary longer.
-
I'll be streaming my match against Dunduks tomorrow at 3 EST. twitch.tv/dethwing
This should be interesting, because dominion isn't my usual stream material.

Good luck to both of you streaming! I mean, in terms of making sure the stream is working. Luck wishes for the matches are given equally to all competitors.
-
My match is going to be 12 AM EST Saturday night (aka Sunday Morning). Sorry about the ridonculous time. Singapore <-> Eastern US is difficult, heh.

Match starts in 20 minutes, unless jaybeez wants to start early. I'm live now, just waiting for things to get started.
Edit: It turns out live-streaming when there's nothing going on at all is weird, and also makes viewers think the match is supposed to have started. So I'm not starting until jaybeez arrives.
Edit 2: live for real now.

Going live for round 4!

Well, due to goko problems our match has been postponed. We're going for thursday at 3 now.
-
Well shoot. I didn't realize they were still on daylight savings time. It would be for another hour.
Actually, we just went ON daylight savings time - they AREN'T on it yet.
Yeah, it doesn't make any sense, I agree.
Why do I bring this up? Because I think DST is confusing for little to no point, and should be done away with. It's one of my pet peeves.

Turns out I got the timezone conversion wrong: the match is in 2 1/2 hours, at 2:00 Pacific time. Apparently Europe ALSO changed daylight savings since we synched, so I was off by even more than I can blame myself for.

Going to stream my match against Psyduck at 10:30 am PST on Wednesday. Winner has a good chance of top 16, I haven't done the math on tiebreakers to see if it's guaranteed. I may not have a mic this time, but I'll try to get chat in video stream working properly.

I'll be streaming my match against Beyond Awesome in 22 hours, at UTC/GMT Monday 1AM. That's 9PM Sunday, forum time, and 6PM Sunday on the west coast, where my opponent and I will both be playing from.
The winner here has a chance at the playoffs, if the other matches go well, but it's far from a guarantee.

I will (try to) stream my playoff match against Monsieur X. We are set for Saturday 2pm (GMT/UTC), so 4 pm in France and 11 am in Argentina.
I will be posting a youtube link with the live stream and a freenode link with a chatroom here before the match (despite trying, I could not get twitch to work from my computer, while Hangout broadcasts worked in the first trial). Hopefully, we won't go over the 4 hour limit.

Going live.

My match against DG will be Sunday, 20:30 CEST (= UTC +2)
http://www.twitch.tv/Stef_42
-
My match against MarkowKette will be taking place Sunday at "whenever Stef's match is over." Why? Well, so that people don't have to choose which to watch (let's not kid ourselves as to which they'd pick, but either way that works out for everyone).
-
My match against Monsieur X will be starting in about 20 minutes.
You can login to freenode's IRC, channel "#gokodom" to chat about the game/stream. You can also point your browser to webchat.freenode.net and use the same channel name to chat from your browser instead of a local IRC client.
The stream will be available in my youtube channel once it starts. The channel is at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCqe-9Jbq9lHzUeuyVOlcZw (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCqe-9Jbq9lHzUeuyVOlcZw)
I will try to edit this post with the stream link once it begins, and also post it in the chat.
EDIT: Feel free to chat about the ongoing game. I will be logged in just to retrieve and keep the chat to read later, and maybe post something in between games, but Monsieur X and I agreed not to look at the chat during games. Game will be completely live because I have no idea how to delay the broadcast, if at all possible.
EDIT2: Going live! The link for the stream is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50R3vNiSVJM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50R3vNiSVJM)

Will be streaming my match against AI tonight at 10 PM EST (GMT -4). Sorry about that one, day-walking Europeans.
:'( i really wanted to watch that live.
-
Yeah I don't want to stream on top of this. I'll probably do my usual Tuesday stream earlier in the day and hopefully I'll be able to watch this.
-
My quarterfinal match with Smartie will be at 9PM Eastern (GMT-4) on Saturday May 3 and I'll be streaming it.
If I'm not mistaken, I'm the last streamer left in the tournament. No pressure...

My quarterfinal match with Smartie will be at 9PM Eastern (GMT-4) on Saturday May 3 and I'll be streaming it.
If I'm not mistaken, I'm the last streamer left in the tournament. No pressure...
Going live now!

Congratulations, Adam.
It is so nice that "our last streamer" is still part of the match.
Go, do it, and beat AI, regardless of any chances suggested by any leaderboards.

Thanks, I'm glad people are enjoying watching this amazing run. ;D

The for-funsies third place match between michaeljb and myself will be on Tuesday, May 20 at 7PM Eastern (UTC-4) and I'll be streaming it!
After the finals match tonight I'll be shutting my eyes and ears to the forums so that I can remain unspoiled about the kingdoms we'll be playing, since we'll be using the same ones as in the finals. It will be exciting!

The raw video of the games is available on the twitch.tv page.
I'd also like to upload the recording I made of the twitch.tv page itself. That includes the spectators' comments in the twitch chat rooom. Is there a way to upload that video to twitch also, or do I have to host it somewhere else?
Match Result: Not yet decided! So far it's tied at 4-4. We'll be heading into extra innings on Saturday or Sunday (tbd).

And yes, just look up the unrated games between me and JOG.

It turns out that any braindead monkey can upload to YouTube. I guess I could have inferred that. Edit: Nope. Apparently I'm not quite qualified. Some of my videos just got rejected for being too long.
This playlist has the games along with the twitch.tv chat room. So you can watch me play while reading about how I should be playing differently. Still no audio. JOG and I are planning to do a voice-over discussion this evening (Saturday), so I'll upload that version after.

Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon/evening, depending on your time zone. Probably 2 PM PDT, but that's not set in stone yet.

Thanks for doing this as I was not able to watch it live. I probably wouldn't have rewatched it without sound, but with twitch chat it's really interesting.
I just want you to know that the chat in game 7 is out of sync. I haven't watched game 8 yet, but after the first few seconds it seems that there is the same problem.

The fact that you have to use spoiler tags for those games spoils it already.

How can you tell about the chat sync? Is it way off? I can probably fix it with a little video editing magic if I know how far off it is.
FYI, JOG and I just created audio commentary for games 1,2, and 5. So I'll add that to the existing files sometime this evening.
Game 5 lasts 36 minutes, and games 4,6,7, and 8 are equally slow (mostly my fault). JOG and I quickly realized that we just didn't have 36 minutes worth of stuff to say about the game, so I'm going to try strategically accelerating the other games before we add commentary to those.
We'll see if any of this works out at all well, but you may want to hold off on watching until I upload the new versions, particularly on the slower games.

Don't accelerate the game; just slow down the audio commentary so it sounds like you've both recently inhaled xenon gas.

It's about 5mins off, probably exactly the stream delay!?

Hmm... it might be off by 5 min, but it's definitely not because of the stream delay. That affects both the broadcast and the chat itself.

it looks to me like it is scrolled up, and new chat messages (that are in sync with the video), are appearing well below the screen, and we only see them once they are pushed up by even newer chat messages.
-
Dear AI,
are you going to announce it somewhere when you have re-uploaded the video with your audio commentary? I am looking forward to seeing it.

Ah, okay. I think I know what the problem is then.

Yes.
Improved versions of the videos for my match with JOG are up on my GokoDom III Finals youtube playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRTqbp6RCzFBaGbUHDTKoKlYsM7RjUAWx).
I mostly fixed the game-vs-chat sync problem with games 7 and 8. It can't be perfectly fixed because the recording itself is flawed, but I was able to get reasonably close.
I've uploaded games 9 and 10 with SCSN and Mic Q doing live their commentary. Unfortunately, my secondary OBS recording that was supposed to capture the twitch chat room didn't work right.
JOG and I did post-game audio commentary for games 1, 2, and 5. After doing the 36-minute-long game 5, we decided that we just didn't have enough to talk about during all that time to warrant doing to same for games 3,4,6,7,8.
One solution would be to strategically accelerate those games so that they run for 10-15 minutes instead of 25-40. It probably wouldn't work all that well to just 3x the whole video though, so it really would require some effort to identify and selectively accelerate through the parts where I'm apparently just sitting there meditating. And I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment, so while I'd be happy to participate in more post-game commentary, someone else would have to do the video editing to accelerate the games. Any volunteers?

I could do that if nobody else is willing, though with my connection, getting the edited files back to you might take a while.

Thanks! And please don't feel obligated if you start doing it and decide the task is just too intolerably boring. :P
As encoded, it's about 300 MB for games 3,4,6,7,8 all combined. So depending on how aggressively you accelerate and your settings for reencoding, it might not be more than 100 MB or so that you'd have to upload back.
I'm uploading them to a public Google Drive folder right now: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0XpKAqh3XUTam14ZC1adkkyODA&usp=sharing
I can't imagine all this reencoding is good for the video quality, but we'll see what we get. Right now it's at 250kpbs, 10 fps, and a very low keyframe rate (1/30s, i think). That last is very important to getting good quality Dominion at a low bitrate.
-
If this gets done could someone post here about it? I may find myself with some time this week and I might go ahead and do this if nobody else has.
-
michaeljb and I will be playing the rest of the KDC finalists tonight for fun at 7:30PM Eastern (UTC-4) and I'll be streaming it.

Oh, right, I was supposed to do this too. I'm going to start tomorrow.
-
When the audio is being added, there is no reason to re-encode again, right? So I should just try to make the optimal compromise between quality and file size here. EDIT: I can get them down to ~10MB per video with a tolerable (and I'm really picky) quality.
Also, I tried doing this with AviSynth, which would've been pretty nice since uploading the script would have been enough, but alas, for some reason, AvsPmod doesn't want to show the preview of the video for these files even though it works fine on others :(. And it's just too much of a hassle to do it with Notepad and MPC-HC.

So, I forgot about this again. Are people still interested in this?

You are right. I honestly dont know.
